Oscar® Gold Meets Sustainable Green: Actress Missi Pyle of Best Picture Winner “The Artist” Takes Stage in Red Carpet Green Dress Gown
Eco-Friendly Gown Selected among Hundreds of Aspiring Designers
Actress Missi Pyle had two wins at the Oscars® last night: an Academy Award for Best Picture winner, “The Artist,” and her stunning gown, which was made entirely of sustainable materials as part of the Red Carpet Green Dress contest.
Started by Suzy Amis Cameron – environmental advocated and wife of James Cameron – Red Carpet Green Dress calls on designers around the globe to submit a red carpet worthy design for the Oscars, made entirely of sustainable materials.
“What an incredible experience to see Missi wearing this gorgeous, sustainable gown and accepting the Oscar® for Best Picture,”said Suzy Amis Cameron. “Ultimately, Red Carpet Green Dress isn't just about a pretty dress, but about shifting our consciousness and raising awareness around the choices we make each day. This could mean our choices around fashion or choices around the products we use in our home. A red carpet dress is usually worn once and involves a wasteful process, so my hope is that we’ve spurred people to think about their daily actions, choices and purchases.”
The winning design was submitted by Venezuelan born, Miami-based Valentina Delfino. It was made in Los Angeles by couture designer Birgit Muller and skilled tailor Angelo Santos.
“It was such an honor to wear this dress - to be on a carpet that's all about glamour, and have that glamour be sustainable,” said Missi Pyle. “To have so many people watching, and encourage them to question the purchases they make, feels relevant. Being on the carpet in this gorgeous gown, and making a statement, made me feel like the luckiest girl in the world."
“To see everything come together after months of hard work was indescribable,”said Red Carpet Green Dress Global Campaign Director Samata Angel. “We have shown that sustainable fashion can be beautiful, and carry a mass appeal. I am thrilled about all the future holds for Red Carpet Green Dress and look forward to delivering another successful campaign next year!”
Amis Cameron started the contest in 2009, during a non-stop red carpet bonanza she experienced while attending "Avatar" premieres, in which she wore countless dresses and started to understand the environmental footprint of fashion. The experience helped her shape the annual dress challenge.
About the Dress
The gown was made from peace silk and organic chiffon, lined with vintage lining and using a recycled zipper. The fabric was hand dyed safely on Californian soil at an OSHA approved facility by 'A Dyeing Art'. The color was created using natural mineral dyes to achieve the pastel aqua shade.
All of the pleating on the dress was done by hand - therefore using less electricity and reducing the carbon footprint. Peace Silk or Cruelty–Free Silk is the non-violent silk created through the process that permits the full life cycle of the pupae. The silkworm is capable to emerge naturally and only then the cocoons are unwound. The traditional approach kills the worm inside. This is done through the process of heat or steam; in order to keep the pupa from breaking through the cocoon causing numerous threads rather than having a single fiber.
